Advice for Schools

School-based staff often need additional help and guidance when addressing the needs of young people with acquired brain injuries.

Beth Wicks provides such advice and support, tailored to meet the needs of the individual child and the school.

A typical school visit would be preceded by consideration of all available written information and records and then include observation of the child in the classroom situation. There would be discussion with key members of teaching and support staff which would lead to recommendations for strategies / curricular modifications / additional resources etc. that could be beneficial for the child and the staff. This frequently involves advice regarding the formulation of Individual Education Plans and input to the Statement review process. There would be further follow-up visits to review and modify suggestions and telephone contact when necessary.

Schools often request information in the form of a presentation to the whole staff as a staff meeting or in-service training event.

School In-Service Training

Such sessions are of variable length and content to meet the needs of the individual school.

Typically information is provided regarding the nature of acquired brain injury, the differences between the difficulties resulting from this and other learning difficulties and an outline of typical resulting special educational needs.

When this relates to a specific child or children in the school, there will be discussion of their particular needs.

There will always be opportunity for questions and further discussion.

Support and in-service training for schools is sometimes funded directly by the school or L.E.A. or sometimes through a compensation claim.
